Worship is fundamental to our lives as disciples of Jesus. We know that the Lord makes His home in the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3). When we worship we experience and take delight in a unique manifestation of His presence, and where His presence is, there is healing, deliverance, joy, peace, the taste of His goodness! Who doesn’t want some of that!?
Jesus explained in John 4:23–24 that, “…the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth..” [Emphasis Added]
This is the model for our ‘worship nights’. The essence of worship is to know God truly and to then respond from the heart to that knowledge by valuing or treasuring Him and being satisfied with Him above all else.
Good and pleasing worship is dependant upon on a right understanding of who God really is - Jesus said, “I am the way, the TRUTH and the life.” (John 14:6) [Emphasis Added] Anything else is in fact a form of idolatry, something of our own invention. It is for this reason that we give great importance to good preaching and teaching in our gatherings.
Secondly, worship depends upon the affections of our heart (a word synonymous with ‘spirit’ in the scriptures) being disposed toward God and His all-surpassing value. Its for this reason that we sing God’s praises and allow our hearts to be moved by who He is and to be guided by His promptings!
So true worship is founded upon a proper understanding of God’s nature, it is an authentic and heart-felt valuing of God’s worth, and it is to this end that we aspire to every Wednesday night. You are most welcome to join us!
